Catch a wave in the world’s first indoor man-made lagoon on the outskirts of Snowdonia

I was bouncing up and down on the water when I heard the soft rumble build up behind me.

Looking back, I could see a growing wall of water, topped with white foam, closing in.

As I stabilized on my surfboard, Ross, my instructor, floating about five feet to my right in a bright red wetsuit, shouted: paddles.

Seconds later, the thunderous wave was over me and, like an aquatic rocket, propelled me forward with mighty force.

The water roared, engulfing me as I struggled to ride the torrent.

It wasn’t the mighty surf of Hawaii or Bondi or even Cornwall, but rather the world’s first indoor man-made lagoon on the outskirts of Snowdonia.

And it was my very first, and very wonky, time on a surfboard.

Carried away by the rush of water, I tried to stand but, just like that, I was ejected from my board and submerged.

Sliding elegantly past me, Ross turned and shouted in encouragement, “You almost got it. Only 90 seconds left until the next one.

So, I waded and splashed, back to where we started 30 feet away, ready to go again.

Filled with Welsh rainwater, Adventure Park Snowdonia’s invigorating lagoon is a feat of engineering that ensures precision waves every 1.5 minutes.

With the newly opened Hilton Garden Inn conveniently located next door, it’s the perfect base for an adventure-filled trip on the outskirts of the ever-glorious Snowdonia National Park.

Guests at this Welsh wonderland enjoy premium comfort – when they’re not neck-deep in the waves.

Sleek modern rooms and 31 chic glamping pods for up to four people are ideal for those who want to feel close to nature without losing modern comforts.

There’s also the on-site Zephyr Bar & Grill which serves hearty comfort food such as Welsh-raised sirloin steaks and surfer burgers served with fries.

All of this is much appreciated after spending an afternoon being beaten by those waves or a day hiking the nearby peaks.

After my first day of surfing, I decided to give my sea feet a break and head for the majestic mountains instead.

The Cwm Idwal trail, about a 40 minute drive from the hotel, offers some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen.

GO: Snowdonia Adventure Park

The three-mile hike takes you around a small lake nestled between soaring cloud-covered cliffs.

It takes about three hours and isn’t the easiest of the treks, with rocky trails and rocky peaks and valleys, but the spectacular views are worth it.

Once I drank in the scenery, my muscles yearned for a relaxing afternoon at the hotel’s Wave Garden Spa, which is sure to soothe even the most aching bodies.

This haven of peace offers views of the lagoon and the nearby hills and has an outdoor terrace so you can watch the waves while gently bathing in the heated pools.

Glass of Prosecco in hand, I headed straight for the spa’s waterfall pool and luxury Himalayan salt sauna – making sure to wash my drink down before entering.

But it’s the spa’s outdoor area that really stands out – with a hot hydrotherapy pool, loungers, relaxation modules and fire pits to keep guests warm on even the most humid Welsh days.

Opened last year, the spa uses chemical-free water while promoting cleansing and purifying treatments, as well as Welsh-grown herbs to promote relaxation.

To treat myself, I opted for a hot wave massage that uses heated ceramic pods scented with lavender, eucalyptus, and rosemary to slowly relieve stiff muscles.

The waves outside may not have lived up to those in Australia, but if every surf session here ends with a soothing back massage, I’ll take Adventure Lagoon any day Park above Bondi Beach.
