RALEIGH, NC (AP / WWAY) – The chairman of the State Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission has resigned from the board, citing anxiety over the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and recent challenges to the agency for the distribution of alcohol.

AD “Zander” Guy tendered his resignation to Governor Roy Cooper on Friday.

He held this post for over four years and resigned as mayor of Surf City in March 2017 to take the post.

Guy, 72, told The Associated Press on Monday that recent events have caused him and his wife to reassess his service, including problems with the alcohol supply and the deaths of people close to him in due to COVID-19.

Guy was previously president while Beverly Perdue was governor.
