Happy 150th Birthday, Stearns Wharf – NBC Los Angeles

What there is to know

  • The Santa Barbara wharf will be 150 years old in 2022
  • Dockside merchants will run themed deals of $ 1.50 on the first Wednesday of the month, throughout 2022
  • Look for a big party, with fireworks, in the Waterfront district in October 2022

A SESQUICENTENARY … is a big deal, thanks to the fact that it honors something that has passed a century, and then 50 more years, an impressive achievement, indeed. Quite often, vibrant parties are held, hometown parades are planned, and a community takes some time to honor any local monument that happily approaches this awe-inspiring milestone. And Stearns Pier, a structure adjacent to the surf of Santa Barbara beloved by locals and visitors alike, will celebrate this major anniversary in 2022, with both a big party filled with fireworks and a monthly nod to its remarkable year. The fancy fanfare just feels right; after all, so many iconic photographs of the picturesque town surrounded by mountains, taken from the perspective of the ocean, highlight this beloved landmark.

LOOKING BACK: “When John Peck Stearns built the wharf in 1872, he not only opened the door to large-scale commerce and commerce, he introduced Santa Barbara to the rest of the world,” explained Visit Santa Barbara. The wharf had to deal with its twists and turns, sticky wickets, and plenty of challenges including fires and a surprise spray of water, but it resisted. Today, it attracts people looking to take in the breathtaking ocean views it offers, shop and eat lunch, and savor a slice of the American Riviera’s past in the 19th century.

THE TO-DOS 2022 WILL INCLUDE … an October party loaded with fireworks, as well as monthly specials offered by the wharf merchants. These deals will be available every first Wednesday of the month, starting in January 2022, so stop by and take advantage of the savings, which are almost all themed around “$ 1.50” (yes, all to mark the 150th anniversary of the platform). Nature’s Own will have Pink Murax Shells for $ 1.50, every first Wednesday, while you’ll rent a second stick for $ 1.50, once you’ve rented the first stick at the regular price, at Stearns Wharf Bait & Tackle ( oh yes, and an extra cup of bait will be offered).

INTERESTING FACT: The wharf is 2,300 feet long and has 2,307 piles. It covers a total of 3.8 hectares. For more facts and anecdotes on the dock, follow Visit Santa Barbara.
