Michail Antonio scored the first goal after just five minutes of play between goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and his fragile back line.
But it was Lingard’s momentous moment of brilliance that helped the hosts hang in there and claim the priceless victory, their 13th in the top flight this season.
A brief offside cry threatened to derail his efforts against former boss Jose Mourinho before VAR finally considered that Pablo Fornals had not interfered with play.
“Everyone has the same mindset and the same goal for the end of the season,” added Lingard. “For us, it’s about staying united as a team and, on days like this, working hard for all three points.”

However, the searing playmaker was keen to play down the importance of the leaderboard at this point.
He added: “We don’t look too much at the table. We want to take it game by game. It is a pleasant position.
