A Kelowna e-foil company that claims to be the first in the world to add marine lights to its boards is seeing a growing interest in the sport.

Riders glide on a battery powered board that sits above the water for this surf sport, no wake needed.

Owners Carey Missler and Taylor Coulthard, of MSLR Electric E-Foil, say they are the first to add an LED marine safety lighting system to their hydrofoil electric surfboards, or e-foils for short. Their patent is currently pending.

The lighting system allows the rider to safely navigate the waters at dusk and in the dark, Missler said.

The two-year-old company decided to add lighting to the boards because it’s a growing new sport and they wanted to focus on safety.

Missler attributes the growing interest in the sport to the pandemic, as people search for new things to do and foiling technology that gets better every day.

Passionate about surfing, Missler fell in love with surfing after discovering Tofino at 18.

“It led to going to Australia and many other countries and it became a routine, a habit and we did surf trips all the time for the next 20 years,” he said. He became addicted to foil surfing and after researching the sport the company started releasing boards in 2021.

The company sold over $ 1 million worth of product in six months and had to temporarily stop selling boards because it couldn’t keep up with demand, Missler said. Shipping times were also affected due to supply chain issues amid the pandemic, so they started making some of the products locally to offset the challenges.

Now, they’ve finally caught up with their customers and are selling the boards again, Missler said. The price of one is $ 14,000.

Their customers order boards from all over the world, but the greatest demand for boards has been in Canada. Okanagan residents have also expressed interest in the advice.

“Canada crushed it… there are tons of locals,” Missler said.
