Store mobilizes to help replace surfboards destroyed in Waikiki fire

WAIKIKI, Hawaii (KITV) – A local store steps in to help raise funds for those affected by a fire that destroyed hundreds of surfboards in Waikiki.
Used Surfboards Hawaii has created a GoFundMe page to raise $ 250,000. Owner Alex Utal said he hopes the store will be able to raise enough to donate around $ 500 to each person who lost their board in the fire.
âA lot of people coming in, you feel like they’ve just arrived from a funeral. It’s this deep connection with their boards of directors, âhe explained.
Last year, the store offered a discount to those affected by a fire that destroyed a surf rack in the same location. Utal said that with a low inventory this year, they decided to raise funds instead.
“I hope we can come together with the community and help people who have lost something very important to their way of life, their way of life and a reliever for the stress that prevails in the world today.” Utal said.
