Watch: Employees of a California jewelry store fight off thieves

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) – An attempted robbery at a California jewelry store resulted in a melee as store employees refused to let the business be ransacked without a fight.

Around noon on Sunday, four hooded thieves entered Princess Bride Diamonds and began using hammers to smash display cases filled with valuable jewellery.

Employees, including a brother and sister who work for their father in the family business, responded by punching and kicking the attackers.

A young woman even crushed an intruder over the head with a chair.

Within seconds, the would-be thieves decided to retreat.

The Baca family has been in the diamond business for years, but this was the first such attack they had faced.

“We had an idea that it might happen, but it’s always different when it actually happens,” said employee Dallas Baca.

He added that the focus was on forcing the intruders out.

“At one point, while I was fighting them, one of them actually hit me in the head with a hammer, on the side of my left temple, but I didn’t even register it before their leaving because there was so much, like, the adrenaline going on,” Dallas Baca added.

“I’m just glad everyone is okay. I am happy that our team came together and that we were able to fight and stop what was happening,” added colleague Sarah Baca, who confirmed that she called the police immediately after the attack.

Sarah Baca was also the employee who hit an attacker with a chair as he targeted Lily, another employee.

“I grabbed a chair and hit the one guy attacking Lily on the head,” Sarah Baca said.

Other mall workers said the attack pissed everyone off at the mall, but they’re glad the jewelry store workers fought back.

“We were a bit panicked. Everyone was jostling, so I just told everyone to come to our store,” said Kyle Sary, who works at a nearby surf shop. “I guess they walked into the store, broke things. But the family pushed them away, so good for them, right? »

The owners of the jewelry store said they were unsure what was taken.
